Building and Managing Exams

The Task lecture type in Ukkera allows you to create comprehensive assessments (exams and quizzes). Unlike standard lectures, Tasks feature a specialized Builder and a robust set of settings to control the examination experience.

Prerequisites

  • A lecture created with the type set to Task.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Building Exam Questions

  1. Create a "Task" type lecture and navigate to the Exam Builder (often via the "Expand" or "Edit Questions" icon).
  2. Click Create Question to add a new item.
  3. For each question, you can:
    • Write the Question Text: Support for images and rich text.
    • Set Answer Options: Add multiple choices and mark the correct one.
    • Add Explanation: Provide feedback that students see after completing the exam.
    • Attach Images: Each question can have its own visual context.
  4. Attachments: Use the "Exam Files" section to upload PDFs or images that apply to the entire exam (e.g., a reading passage or a reference table).

2. Configuring Exam Settings

Go to the Exam Settings tab to define the rules:

  • Time Limit: Set the duration in minutes. If empty, students have unlimited time.
  • Passing Mark (Min Degree): The minimum score required for the student to "pass" the exam.
  • Retry Number: The number of times a student can retake the exam.
  • Show Answers: Toggle whether students can see the correct answers and explanations after finishing.
  • Question Navigation:
    • Enable: Students can skip questions and go back.
    • Disable: Students must answer the current question before moving to the next one (Forward only).
  • Randomize Questions: Choose if questions appear in a random order for every try.

3. Reviewing Student Performance

  1. In the Lectures list, click the Statistics icon on your Task lecture.
  2. View the Total Participants and Success Rate.
  3. Score Breakdown: Analyze how many students fall into specific grades.
  4. Manual Review: If your exam includes manual questions, use the Task Review section to grade student submissions and provide feedback.

4. Printing Exams

If you need a paper version of your assessment:

  1. Open the Exam Builder.
  2. Click the Print icon.
  3. The system will generate a clean, formatted PDF version of your questions, images, and options, ready for physical distribution.

Tips

  • Pre-requisite Exams: Combine "Task" lectures with the "Force Student Order" course setting to ensure students pass an exam before they can proceed to the next chapter.
  • Question Analysis: Use the statistics to see if a specific question has a very high failure rate—this might indicate it was too difficult or poorly phrased.
  • Explanation Field: Always fill out the "Explanation" for questions to reduce student inquiries and provide immediate learning feedback.
