Managing Lecture Availability – Ukkera Instructor Dashboard

Learn how to open and close lectures for specific students or entire groups. Control your course content flow with precise access settings.

Managing Lecture Availability

As an instructor, you have full control over when and how students access your course material. You can "lock" (block) or "unlock" (unblock) specific lectures or entire chapters for individual students or pre-defined groups.

Prerequisites

  • A course with published lectures and chapters.
  • Enrolled students or created groups.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Controlling Access for a Specific Student

If you want to grant or revoke access for just one student (e.g., as a reward or for a specific payment arrangement):

  1. Navigate to Students in the sidebar.
  2. Find the student and click the Expand icon (square with arrows) to open their detailed profile.
  3. Select the Lecture List tab.
  4. You will see the course curriculum. Next to each lecture and chapter, there is a Block/Unblock toggle (often represented by a lock or eye icon).
  5. Toggle the switch:
    • Blocked (Closed): The student will see the lecture title but won't be able to play the video or view the contents.
    • Unblocked (Open): The student has full access to the lecture.
  6. Changes are saved automatically and take effect instantly on the student's portal.

2. Controlling Access for an Entire Group

To manage content for a cohort (e.g., releasing one chapter per week):

  1. Navigate to the Groups tab within your course.
  2. Click the Lectures icon (list icon) on the group you wish to manage.
  3. This opens the curriculum view for the entire group.
  4. Use the toggles at the Chapter level to lock/unlock all lectures in that section at once, or use individual toggles for specific lectures.
  5. Note: Setting a block at the group level will apply to every student in that group simultaneously.

3. Global Visibility Settings

You can choose whether students see blocked lectures in their curriculum at all:

  1. Go to the Courses section and click the Edit icon for your course.
  2. In the Course Info tab, locate the toggle for "Show student the closed lecture on".
  3. Toggle ON: Students will see the titles of locked lectures but will not be able to open them. This is useful for showing them what content is coming soon.
  4. Toggle OFF: Locked lectures will be completely hidden from the student's view in the app. This is ideal for maintaining a clean interface or keeping future content a surprise.

4. Understanding Overrides

  • Group vs. Individual: Usually, group-level restrictions provide an efficient way to manage large classes. If a student is in a group where a lecture is "Blocked", they will not be able to see it even if their individual settings were previously "Open".
  • Default State: By default, when you add a new lecture to a course, it is usually "Open" for everyone unless you have specific group rules or auto-block settings enabled.

Tips

  • Drip Feed Content: Use the Group Access feature to release content manually as your semester or training program progresses.
  • Troubleshooting: If a student reports they can't see a lecture, first check the Access Requests (for course-level access) and then check the Lecture List in their student profile to see if it was accidentally blocked.
  • Bulk Unlock: Use the Chapter Toggle to quickly unlock multiple lectures at once, saving time compared to individual toggles.
